Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

If you have noticed that your eyes aren’t as wide and expressive as they used to be, our Cleveland plastic surgeon offers eyelid surgery to give you a more lively appearance. Changes in the appearance of the eyes are often some of the first signs of aging. As we age, skin around the eyes begins to sag as the surrounding muscles grow weak. The appearance of “baggy” eyes frequently results due to fat collection underneath the eyes. These signs of aging may also be compounded by factors such as:

  • Sun exposure
  • Stress
  • Smoking
  • Genetics

Eyelid surgery, medically referred to as blepharoplasty, effectively reduces sagging skin, puffiness, and wrinkles around the eyes. The procedure begins by making incisions along the natural lines of the upper and lower eyelids. Dr. Leedy will then separate the skin from the fatty tissue underneath, and remove the excess skin and fat from the area. In some patients with lower eyelid excess fat the procedure can be done from the inside of the lower eyelid thereby creating a nice improvement without any external scarring. This procedure is best for our younger patients who have excess lower eyelid fat without excess skin. The results typically bring a healthier, more youthful rejuvenation to the eyes that can have a positive affect on the appearance of the entire face. Here at our Cleveland practice, Dr. Leedy often combines eyelid surgery with procedures such as rhinoplasty or face lift for comprehensive aesthetic enhancement. In select patients the procedure can be done in the office under local anesthesia. This avoids unnecessary OR expenses.

During recovery from eyelid surgery, patients will see some mild bruising from the procedure; however, this is temporary and can usually be well disguised with make-up. Patients who undergo blepharoplasty are typically able to return to work and their normal daily routines in about a week to ten days. Your Consultation for Eyelid Surgery

At the time of your consultation Dr. Leedy will review your medical history and discuss your desires and expectations. He will outline a plan to help accomplish your goals in the safest possible manner. You will have time to have all your questions answered. If you so desire we can arrange for a previous patient to talk to you about their experience. We approach the consultation as an opportunity to educate a patient about a procedure and you will never feel pressured or rushed to make a decision about what is right for you. All patients are provided the opportunity to return for further discussions about their procedure at no additional charge and if you decide to go forward there is always an additional consultation prior to the surgery. Educated patients are happy patients and your happiness is our only goal.
