Maybe it happened as you aged or maybe your eyelids have always seemed heavy, but when you have baggy eyes, they can make you look older and impede your vision. At Cleveland Plastic Surgery Institute, plastic surgeon Jason Leedy, MD offers blepharoplasty, also known as eyelid surgery. If you live in or near Mayfield Heights, Ohio, and want to brighten your eyes and make them appear more expressive, call the office to schedule your appointment or book online.
Anyone who has low-hanging or “baggy” eyelids can benefit from blepharoplasty. The skin around your eyes is especially vulnerable to the signs of aging since it’s thin and fragile.
Anyone who has low-hanging or “baggy” eyelids can benefit from blepharoplasty. The skin around your eyes is especially vulnerable to the signs of aging, as it’s thin and fragile.
Because that skin is so fragile, low-hanging eyelids often result as you age because your skin loses its elasticity. This can cause your skin to droop and hang over the edge of your eyelid.
What’s more, accumulated fat underneath the eyes often accompany this loose, sagging skin. The muscles under your eyes can also weaken, causing more sagging and baggy skin beneath your eyes.
While these signs of aging can occur naturally, sun exposure, smoking, and stress can make them start when you’re younger. This tendency can also run in families.
When you see Dr. Leedy for eyelid surgery, he makes small incisions along your eyelids. Through these incisions, he inserts instruments to separate your eyelid skin from the fat beneath it. He then removes the fat and trims off any unnecessary skin.
If your under-eye muscles are weak, he tightens them during your blepharoplasty.
In some cases, Dr. Leedy can perform lower eyelid surgery by using an incision on the inside of the eyelid, eliminating any risk of scarring. This procedure is best for patients who have fat under their eyes, but not an excessive amount of skin.
Once he removes the fat and skin, Dr. Leedy closes your incisions. The entire blepharoplasty takes between 60-150 minutes and is performed as an outpatient procedure.
After your surgery, you may experience some discomfort, bruising, and swelling. You can return to work within 7-10 days.
